About Me

My photo
This blog started because we needed a tenor in the church choir... Bob, Karen and I told Mike that if he joined the choir we would go out after practice every Thursday for drinks and appetizers. After a while we decided that it would be more fun (and less expensive!) to take turns hosting a "wine & cheese" night. Then Bob had the brilliant idea to "Taste the Vine" in alphabetical order. We started with Cabernet Sauvignon. The rules were simple: 1) The wine had to start with your designated letter, and 2) the bottle had to be covered up so we didn't know what we were drinking. I decided to write down our scores so that we would know which wines we liked the best....then was "forced" into writing a blog so that we could share our "finds" with our friends. So, enjoy!!

EARTHQUAKE! Great Wine and Food Pairings!

Thursday April 11, 2013 hosted by Bob and Karen

Wine #1:  Earthquake Petite Sirah (Lodi Appellation) 2010
First taste comments:
Jess “Smells really good”
Elizabeth “I like it. Very smooth.”
Andy “Doesn’t make my ears hurt”
Becky “A deep fruit flavor. Plum.”
Karen “Smoky”
Mike “Blackberry”
Winemaker notes:Big, ripe dark berries leave just a hint of sweetness on the tongue with overtones of chocolate and tobacco. A long peppery finish follows. Ample tannins and substantial body make this one an enormous and delicious swallow of wine. Up front blueberry syrup, black cherry and coffee bean shake up the senses, finishing with warm cigar box cedar and vanilla flavors. Brawny, solid tannins send aftershocks down the throat creating a seemingly endless finish. When all is said and done this Petite Sirah leaves its mark of destruction, leaving teeth and glasses stained of its inky dark color.

Linda “I taste pear mostly”
Wayne “Apricot”
Karen “Tart”
Bob “But not an ear hurter”
Mike “I’m trying to see if it goes with toothpaste”
Elizabeth “Tarter than I thought”

Winemaker notes:
Our Sauvignon Blanc, from the first fruit harvested during our 150th Anniversary year, evokes aromas of grapefruit, lime and a hint of tropical passion fruit. Tantalizing flavors of orange blossom and tangy citrus commingle with a sprightly acidity that provides a refreshing finish. As always, night harvests guarantee fruit freshness in our signature style wine.

Food #1 – Brie with Fig

Meg “Way more mellow with the cheese”
Sean “Tastes a lot better with the cheese”
Becky “I am not a fan of brie, but the wine is really good with it and the fig”

Karen “So far I like the crab the best”

Wine #2:  Charles Krug 2009 Merlot – Napa Valley

First taste comments:

Sean “Some spice”
Linda “Is it oaky?”
Karen “Yes. Smoky”
Becky “Has a bit of a sour after taste”
Linda “It does have an after taste. Not sure it’s sour.”

Winemaker notes:
Our rich ruby-hued Merlot is fruit-forward with aromas akin to a basketful of ripe cherries, blackberries and dried blueberries. Supple, integrated oak melds with cherry pie, mocha and slight mineral notes. Firm yet soft tannins develop on the palate and lead to a long, elegant finish. Look to pair this wine with artisanal cheese, roasted meats or baked lasagna.
